Did you know some napkin holders used to wear ballgowns?

Napkin Ladies became popular in the 1940s and 50s, when decorative ceramics from Japan filled American homes after the WW2.
Their design was clever. The porcelain figure forms the bodice, while the wide, slotted skirt holds folded paper napkins. When inserted, the napkins create the illusion of a full hoop skirt or ball gown.
They were often given as bridal shower gifts and were common features at Sunday dinners, holiday meals, and women’s club gatherings in a time when entertaining at home was central to social life.
Today, they’re nostalgic reminders of mid-century hospitality when even a napkin holder was expected to dress for the occasion.
