Franciscan Ware

Franciscan Pottery was introduced in 1934 by Gladding, McBean & Co., a California pottery company known for its architectural tiles. The name “Franciscan” was inspired by the Franciscan monks of early California, tying the brand to the state’s Spanish Mission heritage. Originally called Franciscan Pottery the named changed to Franciscan Ware after its popularity increased.

The most famous patterns are Apple (1940) and Desert Rose (1941). Both became American tableware icons - Desert Rose being one of the best selling dinnerware patterns in the world for decades gracing the table for presidents and even served Queen Elizabeth on her royal visit to the U.S. in 1957.

Each piece of early Franciscan Ware was hand-painted and locally sourced their clay and glazes, making them a true “Made in California” brand.

Certain discontinued glazes like coral pink and seafoam were only produced for a few years and are now quite scarce.

In 1979, production moved to England after the company was acquired by Wedgewood.

From cozy family kitchens to royal tables and elegant soirées, Franciscan pottery has shared meals, memories, and love around the world for generations.
