Flower Frogs

What do frogs and flower arranging have in common?
Long before floral foam was invented in the 1950s, people used small tools called flower frogs to hold stems upright inside a bowl or vase. The holes or pins kept flowers spaced neatly so a handful of garden blooms could turn into a tidy arrangement.
But why the name?
A common explanation is that these little holders sit down in the water at the bottom of the bowl, much like a frog resting in a pond. With the flowers rising above them, the comparison must have seemed fitting.
Flower frogs were made in many forms. Some were simple glass discs with holes, others had metal pins to grip stems, and some were even made as decorative figurals.
From the early 1900s through the 1940s, they were a common household helper when fresh flowers were a regular part of everyday entertaining.
A clever little invention that helped bring the garden to the table.
Tell us, would you/do you use a flower frog for your arrangements?
