Did you know celery used to be fancy enough to get its own vase?
In the Victorian era, celery wasn’t just a side dish—it was a bit of a status symbol. It was harder to grow, often served fresh in winter, and showing it off at the table was a subtle way to impress your guests.
So naturally… it got a display piece.
Tall and narrow glass vessels with a flared top, they were designed to hold celery upright in a bit of water to keep it crisp during the meal. Many were beautifully cut, etched, or even made in colored glass.
As time went on (and celery became a little less full of itself), these vases quietly disappeared from everyday use. Today they're usually filled with flowers instead.
So, would you use one for celery at your table, or stick to flowers and avoid the confusing looks from your guests?
