A Matter of Timing
Happy New Year! With the passing of time, this week we are taking a peek at clocks and their history.
The first mechanical clocks appeared in Europe in the late 1200s and weren’t made to show time at all — they were built to ring bells, signaling when it was time to pray, work, or gather. Clock faces and hands came later.
Everything changed in 1656 when Christiaan Huygens introduced the pendulum clock, dramatically improving accuracy. For the first time, time could be measured reliably by the minute, leading to the rise of household clocks like longcase (grandfather) clocks and mantel clocks.
By the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution made clocks more affordable than ever. American companies such as Ansonia Clock Company used mass-production techniques to bring stylish, dependable clocks into everyday homes — turning timekeeping from a luxury into a daily necessity.
No matter how you keep track of time, remember to cherish every second of it.
